The Board of Studies (BoS) is a fundamental component of the academic system of Annamacharya University. It is responsible for designing, reviewing, and revising the syllabi of various courses offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, introducing new courses and programmes, recommending assessment methods, and ensuring that the curriculum reflects recent advancements in mechanical engineering and allied technologies.

The Board also reviews academic performance, recommends panels of examiners and paper setters, promotes industry–academia collaboration, and suggests measures to enhance the quality and standards of teaching, learning, and research in the department.

Composition of Board of Studies

The Board of Studies for the Department of Mechanical Engineering comprises the following categories of members:

1. Head of the Department – Chairman
2. Senior Faculty Member(s) from the Department of Mechanical Engineering
3. Course Coordinator Members from the Department of Mechanical Engineering
4. Two Subject Experts from outside the Parent University
5. One University Nominee
6. One Representative from Industry/Corporate Sector or an allied area relating to placement
7. One Meritorious Alumnus

Term

The term of the nominated members shall be three years (2024–25 to 2026–27), subject to the approval and nomination orders of the University.

Meetings

The meeting of the Board of Studies shall ordinarily be convened once in an academic year by the Registrar of the University. The date, time, and venue of the meeting shall be fixed by the Registrar in consultation with the Chairperson of the Board of Studies concerned and with the approval of the Vice-Chancellor.

Functions

The functions of the Board of Studies of the Department of Mechanical Engineering include:

1. Review and revise the syllabi of the programmes offered by the department, ordinarily once every two or three years, incorporating the latest advancements in Mechanical Engineering and allied fields.
2. Frame guidelines for developing learning outcomes and graduate attributes-based curricula, blended and online learning modules, add-on courses, teaching, research, community engagement, skill development, exit options, and academic collaborations.
3. Prescribe academic performance indicators and assessment methods for courses offered by the department in accordance with the requirements of professional accrediting agencies.
4. Consider and implement the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and other regulatory authorities regarding the modernization of syllabi and academic programmes.
5. Review the progress of existing programmes, identify deficiencies, and recommend appropriate remedial measures to improve the quality and standards of academic programmes.
6. Recommend to the Academic Council, through the Dean of the concerned Faculty, the introduction of new programmes, their structure, admission criteria, and scheme of examinations.
7. Review question papers from previous examinations and evaluators’ reports on student performance, recommending remedial measures wherever necessary.
8. Recommend annually to the Board of Management a panel of internal and external paper setters and examiners for theory, practical, and viva-voce examinations, as well as adjudicators for M.Phil./Ph.D. theses, wherever applicable.
9. Recommend a panel of thirty subject experts from highly accredited universities and research institutions, as and when required, for nomination to selection committees for the appointment of teachers in the concerned subject.
10. Consider and offer opinions or recommendations on matters relating to Mechanical Engineering referred by the Vice-Chancellor, Board of Management, Academic Council, or the concerned Faculty.
