About Us
The Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI] is the largest multi-disciplinary professional body of engineers, established in 1920 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1935.After Independence, the Institution is a “Body Corporate” protected under Article 372 of the Constitution of India. The Institution has been serving the engineering fraternity for over a Century with its national and international presence through 124 Centers spread all over India, 6 Overseas Chapters, 7 Fora and an Organ namely Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI), Hyderabad. The Institution encompasses 15 (fifteen) engineering disciplines with a Corporate membership of over 2 lakhs. The Institution of Engineers (India) is administered by a National Council with the President as its Head. The IEI has its headquarters located in Kolkata with national presence through more than hundred Centers and several Overseas Chapters.
The Institution was granted Royal Charter on September 9, 1935 by his Majesty the King and Emperor George V, which was a momentous event in the annals of Engineering Industry and education in India. IEI has been recognized as Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India and besides conducting its own research, provides Grant-in-Aid to UG/PG/ PhD students of Engineering Institutes & Universities. IEI, in collaboration with Springer, regularly publishes peer-reviewed international journal in five series, covering fifteen engineering disciplines.

Benefits of Non -Corporate Members [Students]
- Student Members (SMIE) are entitled to enjoy following benefits regarding IEI journals such as avail the journal hard copies at a concessional rate.
- Student Members (SMIE) may access the IEI Library (Sir R N Mookerjee Engineering Information Service Centre) at the headquarters as well as State and Local Centres of IEI.
- Student Members are entitled to receive the monthly color tabloid ‘IEI NEWS’ free of cost.
- Opportunity to participate in technical events e.g. Seminars, Symposia, Conventions, Workshops etc. organized by various IEI centers at State, National and International levels at concessional rate.
- Student Members may avail the opportunity of staying in any of the IEI guest houses.
- Student groups consisting of SMIEs only will be given preference in release of grants for their final year project/thesis work.
Validity
- Student Membership is a Non Corporate Membership and will be valid for six years w.e.f. the date of enrolment.
